Michael Strank (Nov. 1919 – March 1, 1945) was a United States Marine Corps Sergeant of
Carpatho-Rusyn decent born in Jarabina, Slovakia and raised in Johnstown, PA area. He was killed in action during the battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. He is best known for being one of the six flag-raisers and organizing the raising of the second U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945 as captured in the iconic photograph, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.

Everyone, especially U.S. Veterans are welcome.  Free admission.

The Marine Corps War Memorial located in Arlington, VA U.S. Capital was modeled after the flag-raising photograph, features bronze statues of each of the six Marine flag raisers.   [ Update: Marine veteran Ralph Griffiths and his wife Florence living in Girard, OH attended our 2017 event & he spoke  about his military service with Michael Strank, Harlan Block & the other Iwo Jima flag raisers.  The audience was spellbound by his recount of the battles and conditions, the bravery and the deaths on the mountain fighting to capture the island. Ralph Griffiths joined the Marine Corps in 1944 at age of 17, participating in the epic Battle of Iwo Jima, Mt. Suribachi.  He said he was wounded by the same artillery shell that killed flag- raisers Sergeant Michael Strank and Harlan Block.]

Will discuss the lingering rumor that the flag raising photo was staged by photographer Joe Rosenthal, it disturbed him all his life.
