Have you ever been asked the question: “What is your ethnic background?”
“Who are we?” This is a re-occuring question for many Slavs. Am I Slovak, Ukrainian, Russian, or Rusyn? What about the terms: White Russian, Little Russian, Carpatho-Russian, Lemko, Ruthenian, Rusnak, Uhro-Rus’ and Karpato-Rus’? Did your ancestors come from Czechoslovakia, Galacia, Carpathian Mountains, Austro-Hungarian Empire? As one can see there are many labels floating out there. So is it no wonder that there is such confusion while trying to answer this question. Even in one’s own family there can be disagreements of which label to use.
Over one hundred thousand members of an ethnically distinct people from the Carpathian Mountain region of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire immigrated to North America at the turn of the 20th century. The second largest concentration of this Slavic people settled in Cleveland. Their descendants know that they are of Slavic ancestry but may be unsure to which specific ethnic group they belong to.
Join us when John Righetti sorts through these terms and identifies their historical roots. He will also outline the differences between a few of these ethnic groups.
